Istanbul rated as leading destination for international business congresses, boosting investor confidence

Posted on 23 May 2016

Istanbul is one of the world’s 10 most popular places for holding a business congress, according to the latest report by the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA).

The ICCA’s new rankings show that Turkey’s largest city hosted 148 international business congresses in 2015, the eighth highest number out of all major cities globally in 2015. This is an improvement on 2014 when Istanbul was ranked ninth.

This will come as good news for investors of property in Istanbul, as it indicates growing confidence in the city amongst international businesses and corporations. Other cities in the top 10 included Berlin in first place, after climbing three places from 2014, Paris in second, Barcelona in third, Vienna in fourth, London and Madrid joint fifth and Singapore in seventh. Istanbul is followed by Lisbon and Copenhagen respectively.

“Since 2010 Istanbul has maintained its place in the top 10 as one of the leading destinations for international congresses,” said the head of the Istanbul Chamber of Commerce and ICVB, Ibrahim Caglar.

ICCA captured a record number of 12,076 rotating international association meetings in 2015, the largest number of association meetings collected in one year, with 571 more meetings than in 2014.

ICCA CEO Martin Sirk commented: “In an uncertain world with ever increasing business disruption, the stability and continuing long-term growth of international association meetings are encouraging more and more suppliers and destinations to include this market segment in their mix of business. What also remains true is that these are the most complex and long-lead-time meetings to win, requiring excellent research and targeting, top class bidding and presentation skills, and patience.”
