Discover Mauritius

Posted on 22 May 2017

Mark Twain once wrote, ‘Mauritius was made first and then heaven, heaven being copied after Mauritius’. As soon as you set foot on this tiny island located some 500 miles east of Madagascar in the middle of the Indian Ocean, you will immediately see where he was coming from. The Republic of Mauritius, as it is officially known, is the very embodiment of a tropical paradise: enduring sunshine, palm trees, silver sands, coral reefs, azure seas, volcanic mountains, lagoons, parrots – the works!  So how do you decide exactly where to buy your dream home on an island that’s covered from coast to coast with natural wonder? It’s a nice problem to have and one we can help you resolve.

Pamplemousses

Head to the north-west of the island and you will reach the Pamplemousses district; named after the grapefruit-like citrus trees the Dutch introduced to Mauritius from Java. The town itself offers a relaxed atmosphere mixed with a slightly worn charm, and feels a world away from Grand Baie, a bustling coastal village to the north. Just below this tourist hub is Mont Choisy, home to the longest beach on the island. Considered one of the most stunning stretches of sand around – and there’s plenty to choose from – this is great place to take in the legendary Mauritian sunsets.

Delve a little deeper into the Pamplemousses district and you will discover one of the island’s main attractions: The Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden. More commonly known as the Pamplemousses Botanical Garden, this is a soothing and tranquil spot packed with tropical plant species.

Tamarin

Further south on the sun-drenched western coast is Tamarin; an old fishing village close to the Black River that has developed into a thriving residential area and holiday resort. Famous for its dolphins, Tamarin Bay is also a popular location for water sports enthusiasts, with surfers travelling from far and wide to ride its waves. Away from the beach Tamarin entices visitors thanks to its modern marina and 18-hole golf course complete with beach club. Plus you’ll be there in just 45 minutes from the airport.

Anahita

Located across the island on its pristine eastern shores is the luxury Anahita resort. You won’t struggle to unwind if you own a property here as you stroll along the private beaches, take a dip in the infinity pool, pamper yourself in the spa or work on your handicap on the exclusive 18-hole golf course. Buying a home on the Mauritian coastline is a tricky business, with around 90% of property on its palm-fringed shores only available to locals. Anahita is an exception to the rule, however, as it’s entirely freehold; enabling international buyers to purchase their very own piece of paradise by the sea.
